Kids First

The Arc's early intervention support, exists to work with children, age birth to three years old, who have developmental delays, and their family members, by helping them manage the extra work needed to reach the child's maximum developmental potential.

Our Approach!

Research in child learning and development has helped us see the value of everyday activities that occur in your home or in your community as sources for children’s learning opportunities.  Our approach supports you in finding the best opportunities for promoting your child’s growth and development.  These opportunities center around your child’s interests and

 your family’s everyday activities.

Research has shown that, just like adults, children are most likely to pay attention to and learn during activities that they find fun and interesting.  Because you are an important person in your child’s life, KidsFirst time with you will be spent identifying the things you do or want to do in order to provide your child increased opportunities to take part in activities that he/she finds interesting!

With the KidsFirst approach, parents are provided guidance and support on how to use everyday activities to promote learning so that your child has learning opportunities anytime you interact with him/her.  KidsFirst team members do not have to be present for your child to be learning and developing!

ü      A service coordinator is assigned to each family.  The service coordinator is your primary contact and will also be responsible for making sure the KidsFirst team is working on your behalf.

ü      Your family may be assigned a primary team member who will work with a team of specialists who have a variety of backgrounds and qualifications such as special instruction, physical therapy, occupational therapy,                             speech-language pathology and nutrition.

KidsFirst services may be provided in community settings--homes, childcare programs, Mom's Day Out programs--wherever a child spends his days.

Kindermusik, an international music and movement program, is offered through KidsFirst, available both to children receiving Early Intervention supports and to typical children in the Shelby County area.

Infant Massage Instruction is incorporated in many of the techniques offered to parents/caregivers and community classes are led by certified infant massage instructors.
